Day 1 Arrive Entebbe
Arrive in Entebbe today where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Later, a boat trip takes you across Lake Victoria to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary for an exciting encounter with chimpanzees. You'll be able to watch a feeding session from a special visitor platform and learn about the work at Ngamba Island. A project of the Chimpanzees Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservation Trust (CSWCT), Ngamba Island was established in 1997 by the Born Free Foundation (UK), International Fund for Animal Welfare (USA), the Jane Goodall Institute (Germany and Uganda), The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre Trust (UWECT) and the Zoological Board of New South Wales (Australia) to provide orphaned chimpanzees with a secure home to live out their lives, while educating visitors and local communities about their remarkable species and the importance of conserving their fragile forest habitat.
While here, you can also take in some fantastic bird-watching as well as a quick "swim on the equator". A late afternoon return to our hotel in Entebbe.
Day 2 Entebbe-Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Parc National de Volcans | Meals: BLD
After breakfast, drive to the west of Uganda along mountain roads to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Bwindi is the richest forest in Uganda and is one of the few large expanses of forest in East Africa where lowland and montane communities merge. The valley bottoms contain a dense ground cover of herbs, vines and shrubs, with only a few trees - hence its name "the Impenetrable Forest". This is also one of the richest faunal communities in East Africa where about one half of the world's population of the endangered Mountain Gorillas live. (Some departures will travel to Parc National de Volcans in Rwanda for overnight and gorilla trekking.)
Day 3 Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Parc National de Volcans | Meals: BLD
Start the day by meeting with your guide to learn about trekking in the mountains and how to behave once you are in the presence of the gorillas. The Mountain Gorilla is extremely rare, with only about 650 remaining gorillas making their home in the areas of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda, Volcanoes Park in Rwanda and Virunga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Adult males are called silverbacks because a saddle of gray or silver-colored hair develops on their backs with age. A fully erect mail can reach more than 6 feet in height with an arm span of more than 7 feet. With luck, today you will encouter the gorillas and spend about an hour with them. (Note: trekking can be fairly strenuous, with arduous walks through dense forestation lasting 6 hours or more. You will also be trekking at relatively high altitudes. Seeing gorillas is not guaranteed but the success rate is about 90%).
Day 4 Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Parc National de Volcans | Meals: BLD
You might opt to pre-book a second permit for trekking today. For those not trekking, enjoy a forest walk, observing the local birdlife as well as other local wildlife. You might choose to relax in camp or perhaps visit a nearby village.
Overnight at Buhoma Lodge, or similar, on a full board basis.
Day 5 Lake Mburu National Park | Meals: BLD
Your drive takes you into the Uganda Highlands - the Switzerland of Africa - with beautiful vistas of the lush green area. Continue to Lake Mburo National Park, a small park that hosts a great variety of game including zebra, leopard, various antelope and hippo - as well as prolific birdlife. Here you may go on a walk with a local guide or on game drives exploring this park.
Lake Mburo National Park, which is 260 square kilometres in size, was gazetted in 1982 as Uganda's fourth national park. It is composed primarily of grassland, wetland and acacia woodland habitats. At the centre of the park lies Lake Mburo which, together with 14 other lakes in the area, forms part of an extensive wetland system. The park is home to topi, eland, klipspringer, zebra, buffalo, oribi, sitatunga, and leopard as well as an excellent variety of water and acacia savannah bird species like crested crane, marabou stork and bronze-tailed starling.
Mantana Lake Mburo Tented Camp is a classic tented camp in the grand safari tradition, providing the only luxury accommodation inside the Lake Mburo National Park. It is set in a commanding hilltop position overlooking Lake Mburo and its surrounding eco-system. Each of the guest tents are set on wooden platforms with veranda, twin bedroom, dressing room and en-suite bush shower and toilet. Solar power electric lighting is fitted in each tent. The dining and bar facilities are also set on raised wooden platforms that provide stunning views of Lake Mburo. Lake Mburo Tented Camp provides first class service and comfort in a truly tranquil and natural setting, in the classic African safari tradition.
