Day 1 Miami-San Jos
Arrive in San Jos, the capital of Costa Rica set in the heart of the Meseta Central. You will be met and transferred to your hotel where the remainder of the day is at leisure.
Day 2 Pos Volcano Excursion | Meals: BL
A full day excursion takes us along winding roads, past fertile fields to Pos Volcano. This impressive volcano stands 8,660 feet and has a caldera that is more than 1.6 miles wide. Walk along the trail to a crystal blue lagoon, amidst tropical ferns and forest filled with exotic flowers and brilliantly plumed birds. Enroute back to San Jose we stop for lunch in Sarchi, the center of production for the colorful oxcarts that graced Costa Rican fields and perhaps most famous for its pink church.
Day 3 San Jos-Tortuguero | Meals: BLD
After an early morning departure, we travel through the Braulio Carrillo National Park, a deep rain forest. We stop for breakfast before continuing on to Moin to board small boats for our journey along the Canal de Tortuguero. Our journey takes about 1 1/2 hours and is filled with sights and sounds of the bustling waterway and fascinating birdlife along the banks of the canal.
Day 4 Tortuguero National Park
After a leisurely morning, board small boats for continued exploration of the smaller, secondary canals. Keep a lookout for river otters, crocodiles and turtles, along with the very talkative howler monkeys and Toucans.
Day 5 Tortuguero-Arenal | Meals: BL
We travel through the canals and then by road to nearby Gupiles for lunch before continuing on to Arenal Volcano. Arenal Volcano is one of Costa Rica's most dramatic sites. It towers at 5,389 feet and is almost a perfect cone. Later enjoy one of the benefits of the nearby volcano: take a soothing thermal bath at the Tabacn Hot Springs where hot subterranean mineral-waters from the volcano feed various size pools.
Day 6 Arenal-Monteverde | Meals: B
A late morning departure takes us to Monteverde founded in 1951 by Quakers who emigrated from the United States. Later this afternoon, visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The Cloud Forest covers more than 26,000 acres of forest and is home to more than 2,000 species of plants, 400 species of birds and 100 mammal species. Perhaps the most famous resident of the Cloud Forest is the resplendent quetzal. The male quetzal's tail feathers can reach more than 2 feet!
Day 7 Monteverde-San Jos
Explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest on your own. Or, you might want to take an optional exciting adventure on the Sky Trek. This incredible canopy ride takes you along 10 different cable systems (the longest being 1400 feet with a height of 417 feet) stretched over 1.25 miles. Return to San Jos late this afternoon.
