Arrive in Dar es Salaam this morning. After clearing customs formalities, travel by light aircraft flight into the heart of Africa's largest wildlife reserve. Settle into your tented accommodations and then choose from a variety of activities - or just relax and enjoy the pristine surroundings.

Selous Safari Camp

The Selous Safari Camp, on the banks of the Rufiji River, is designed to blend in with the spectacular natural scenery in what is one of the most photogenic areas of the Selous Game Reserve. Each of the twelve safari tents is on its own raised timber platform, affording guests an unmatched experience of the African bush.

The camp has the prime position at the centre of the unique riverine and lake complex, with the highest concentration of African wildlife and myriad birdlife. There are no fences and no artificial modifications to the natural fauna and so animals wander freely through the camp.

Much as guests are encouraged to become as one with the bush surroundings, full consideration has been given to comfort within the camp itself. The spacious tents are luxuriously appointed, with en suite bathrooms and open air hot-water showers. The camp has its own swimming pool, enabling guests to cool off in the heat of the day. Our chefs prepare the finest cuisine from a well-supplied kitchen. Meals are complemented by a good selection of wines and there is a well-stocked bar.

- 13 vast luxury tents raised onto wooden platforms with palm canopies & views

- Tents designed with widest side to front, to maximize views and breeze

- 6ft wide double beds with bedside tables & lamps

- Ceiling fans and 240v lighting

- En suite bathrooms with double brass basins, cupboard space and dressing area

- Adjoining shower area open to the skies

- Two verandas- one to front off the bedroom, second off rear of tent

- Laundry services available

- The swimming pools are set in shade with day beds and towels

Activities

While our guests find that game viewing and communing with nature can readily be achieved without moving from the camp itself, we offer full opportunities to get out into the bush to explore more of the Selous Game Reserve, its intriguing topography, its fascinating flora and its teeming wildlife.

Open four-wheeled drive vehicles, specially adapted for close-up game viewing, make early morning and evening forays into the surrounding bush with expert guides on hand to explain and point out everything from unusual animal behaviour to rare and elusive species of birds and even the life cycle of termites.

On the Rufiji River and its many tributaries, channels and lagoons, the camp offers game viewing by boat, an opportunity for guests to obtain close-up photographs and views of the many hippo wallowing in the water and the large crocodiles lurking on the banks. The wealth of the Selous reserve's vivid bird life is best seen from the boat.

Relaxing & Dining

One mess area is elevated onto tall platforms and the other is set amongst a grove of trees, both with large comfortable sofas, and wildlife reference library. Table d'hote dining makes the most of African influences and local fresh fruit, vegetables & spices

Activities

- Game drives in open 4-wheel drive vehicles

- River safaris in boats with outboard motors

- Walking safaris

- Fishing

- Mobile bush camping in pristine surroundings (pre-booking essential)

Day 5  Selous-Ruaha National Park | Meals: BLD
A light aircraft flight takes you to Tanzania's second largest park, Ruaha. Your tented camp is set along the banks of the Jongomero River.

Jongomero Camp

Overview

For anyone seeking a true African wilderness experience, a visit to Ruaha National Park is essential. Although the second largest in Tanzania, the reserve is perhaps the least well-known and yet to connoisseurs it is without doubt one of the most spectacular in Africa.

Covering a conservation area of 10,300 square kilometres in the south-west of the country, Ruaha sprawls within and along the Great Rift Valley, covering a unique transition zone where the Eastern and Southern species of both fauna and flora meet against a dramatic topographical backdrop.

This is also one of the few Tanzanian parks where sightings of the rarer antelope, such as the sable, the roan and both lesser & greater kudu, are a probability rather than a possibility. The proliferation of plains game in the park also ensures that the larger predators - leopard and large prides of lion - are unusually active. The bird life, too, is unparalleled with some 530 species recorded.

Accommodation

In this magnificent setting is Jongomero Camp, a luxury safari camp in Africa set under shady acacia trees on the banks of the Jongomero Sand River in the remote south-western sector of Ruaha. Being the only Camp situated in this area of the Park ensures unmatched privacy.

Accommodation at Jongomero comprises eight large and well-appointed tents under enormous thatched roofs that also encompass a spacious private veranda. The dining and living areas are both original and very comfortable offering a great vantage to take in the sights and sounds of the African bush that surrounds the Camp, as does the natural rock pool for those hot days.

- 8 extravagantly spacious tents on raised platforms under a Makuti thatch roof

- 8 Ft wide Dhow wood Emperor beds with bedside tables & lamps

- 240v lighting

- En suite bathrooms with double vanity, ample cupboard space and dressing area

- Hot and cold running water (solar heated with backup immersion heater)

- Spacious front veranda ensuring maximum privacy with views

- Laundry services available

Relaxing & Dining

Public area is beautifully located in the deep shade of an ancient African Ebony tree with uninterrupted views of the Jongomero River bed and the bush beyond.

Dining is an adventure: a combination of table d'hote, elegant buffets, al fresco dinners under the stars, campfire cooking and classic safari picnics.

International cuisine with a truly East African flavour

Swimming Pool

The filtered swimming pool overlooks the Seasonal Jongomero River- allowing for cooling off while still keeping your eyes open for any wildlife activity

Pool mattresses and towels

Activities

-Game drives in open 4-wheel drive vehicles

-Walking safaris accompanied by National Parks Game scouts, and subject to their conditions and availability (Extra charge applicable)

-All day drives with bush picnics

-Excellent Birding

Game

Ruaha covers a unique transition zone- a meeting of Eastern and Southern African species of Flora and Fauna. In addition to plains game, and predators, including elusive wild dogs, sightings of the rarer antelopes such as Sable and Roan, as well as greater and Lesser Kudu occur.

×

Day 6  Ruaha National Park
Game-viewing in Ruaha is particularly exhilarating as the park is teeming with buffalo, elephant and lion, and your game drives are done in open 4WD vehicles.

Day 7  Ruaha National Park | Meals: BLD
Ruaha is from the world Luvaha which means great. The park takes its name from the river of the same name which flows along the eastern border of the park. The river also attracts wildlife and game viewing along the river will no doubt reveal reedbuck and waterbuck enjoying a drink.

Day 8  Ruaha-Ras Kutani | Meals: BLD
Bid the remote wilderness farewell as you return by air to Dar es Salaam and head to the coast for 3 nights of relaxation on the beach. Settle into your beachfront banda and enjoy the laid back, barefoot luxury of the lodge.

Ras Kutani

Overview

The tranquil Indian Ocean shores of Tanzania today belie the centuries of turbulent and often bloody history that raged along this coast in past centuries, shaping the destiny of Africa itself.

Only the distant billowing of the scimitar-shaped sail of an Arab dhow, unchanged for millennia, will give the modern day visitor an indication of a past that witnessed the waves of traders, explorers, adventurers, pirates, slavers and invaders that came with the tides of time.

As European nations bargained with each other in the 20th century "scramble for Africa", East Africa was partitioned and Tanganyika, as it was then known, became a German colony. The First World War saw a major struggle for European influence in East Africa with the British finally gaining control of the territory and ruling as a colonial power until Tanzania gained independence in 1963.

Accommodation

Despite its long, colourful and sanguine history, this beach holiday in Africa offers the tourist that increasingly rare commodity - long stretches of pristine deserted beaches, warm blue seas and an opportunity to experience peace and tranquillity long since swamped by overcrowding in more publicised tropical resorts.

None more so than Ras Kutani, set on a crescent of white sandy beach, washed by the gentle surf of the temperate Indian Ocean. The resort is situated only 35 kilometres south of the port of Dar es Salaam but offers the perfect hideaway, far from the madding crowd.

The setting ensures that feeling of being on one's own tropical island. The hotel is flanked by a fresh water lagoon abutting onto a coastal forest, which spills to the edge of the unspoilt and undeveloped beach.

Accommodation is in twelve spacious, charming cottages constructed of natural, local materials that harmonise perfectly with the wonderful surroundings. Ethnic furnishings impart a sense of the Tanzanian coast's rich cultural heritage. Each cottage has its own en suite bathroom and large veranda with views of the azure ocean. Our chefs pride themselves on preparing the fresh "fruit of the ocean" fare from the readily available local fish and crustaceans.

-12 spacious and charming cottages- each individually handcrafted using local natural materials are situated under the cooling canopy of indigenous trees and offer ocean and lagoon views

-8ft wide double beds with bedside tables & lamps

-240v lighting

-En suite bathrooms with cupboard space and large dressing area

-Hot and cold fresh water showers

-Large front veranda with Swahili daybeds and hammocks

-Laundry services available

Relaxing & Dining

Guest areas are a soaring thatched structure affording superb views of the beach, lagoon and the ocean. Sink into soft pillow seats for pre-dinner drinks or a post- lunch nap as Ras Kutani is truly 'Home-away-from-Home'

Savour freshly prepared 'Fruits of the Ocean' and succulent Pan-African cuisine

Activities

-Relaxation is definitely the keynote

-For the more active try Body boarding, surfing, and snorkelling or explore the fresh water lagoon on a kayak.

-Experience the excitement of horse riding along the beach or through the bush and local plantations

-Nature walks through the indigenous coastal forest, or along the pristine shore

-Guided walks to local inland or fishing village along the coast (subject to tides)

-Deep Sea Fishing around the reefs, or full day excursions to Latham island and Zanzibar Channel (Prior notification required and subject to Ocean conditions)

Fishing is a speciality at Ras Kutani. Some might prefer to toss a gentle lure into the lagoon while others might choose the excitement of deep-sea fishing hunting the "big game" fish in some of Africa's best waters.

Nature lovers will find their pleasure closer to home. The tropical, coastal forest behind the hotel boasts some 132 different species of trees in many of which one can watch the antics of four species of monkey, including the spectacular black-and-white colobus, capable of leaping 30 meters or more between tree tops.

The deserted beach is also ideal for long walks or riding and a chance to experience the enchantment of a tropical shoreline redolent with the history of a continent.

×

Day 9  Ras Kutani | Meals: BLD
There is no schedule, no clocks and not even a cell-phone signal. The days are yours to wander along the beaches, perhaps take an optional horseback ride or try your hand at fishing. By night, you?ll enjoy local dishes made from the freshest seafood and fruit, all from the nearby local villages.
