Upon arrival in San José, the capital of Costa Rica, you will be met and transferred to your hotel where the remainder of the day is at leisure. Day 2 San José-Tortuguero (BLD) Travel through the Braulio Carrillo National Park before continuing on to Moin to board small boats for the journey along the Canal de Tortuguero. The canal is more than 70 miles long and links lagoons and major rivers. Day 3 Tortuguero National Park (BLD) After a leisurely morning, board small boats for continued exploration of the smaller, secondary canals. Keep a lookout for river otters, crocodiles and turtles, along with the very talkative howler monkeys and Toucans. Day 4 Tortuguero-Arenal (BL) After breakfast, travel through the canals and then by road to Arenal Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s most dramatic sites. It towers at 5,389 feet and is almost a perfect cone. It remains active today and almost a day doesn’t pass without some type of minor eruption. Day 5 Arenal (BD) The morning is at leisure for optional activities like a horseback riding tour to Fortuna Waterfall. This afternoon, enjoy a walk through the volcano’s lava trails followed by a soothing thermal bath at the Tabacón Hot Springs where hot subterranean mineral-waters from the volcano feed various size pools. Day 6 Arenal-Monteverde (B) Today, travel to Monteverde. The first part of your journey is by boat across Arenal Lake, the largest and most important lake in Costa Rica. Then, continue by road, enjoying the mountain scenery enroute to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The town of Monteverde was actually founded by a group of Quakers that migrated from North America in the 1950's. The Reserve covers more than 26,000 acres of forest and is home to more than 2,000 species of plants, 400 species of birds and 100 mammal species. Later, visit Selvatura Park, a conservation area with more than 850 acres of protected land and virgin cloud forest. Your take the walk through a series of suspended walkways and bridges built in the cloud forest. You'll also visit the Butterfly Garden with more than 50 butterfly species along with the Humming Bird Garden where more than 15 species of this acrobatic bird will delight you. Day 7 Monteverde (B) The day is at leisure to enjoy the optional activities available. You might want to visit the nearby town of Santa Elena and its frog pond. Or, why not try the Monteverde Cloud Forest Train, a relaxing way to see the forest and learn about the flora and fauna. Day 8 Monteverde-San Jose (B) After breakfast, a scheduled shuttle transfer takes you back to San Jose for an afternoon at leisure. Day 9 San Jose-Depart (B) Your Costa Rican adventure ends today as you fly home.
